The Joy of Wearing Sweaters

Considering that we live in the land of perpetual summer, it’s a special treat to be able to open the drawer that holds our meager supply of warm clothes and actually get to wear them! We spent the last week in Nairobi, Kenya and definitely one of the highlights was the weather. I mean, it got down to, say, maybe 50 or 60 degrees! Brrr….

There were other highlights as well: singing with a worship team, connecting with missionaries from other parts of Africa, hearing the stories of the national African leaders who attended (even one from Liberia–my childhood home!), and eating yummy food that I didn’t have to cook or clean up after!

This one was just too cute not to post! Grace with our friend Janet, a Kenya missionary, who is holding baby Faith. Janet is fostering Faith until she goes home with her forever family. Grace was enchanted by the baby!

McKayla thought it was pretty fun to drag Grace around all over the place. The kids loved all the beautiful grass! We don’t have parks here, so this was the next best thing.

I am so thankful that I am married to a man who is such a great Dad to our daughter. He is always willing and happy to help with feeding, changing, bathing, etc. Grace loves her Daddy so much and is always so excited to see him!

He is Risen!

Praise God we work at a school in a country where we are allowed to openly celebrate the Resurrection. Since our term break started on Friday, HOPAC had their annual Easter service on Thursday. Singing, dancing–and this year–foot washing celebrated the Day.

“I sat so nicely during the program. Notice my new hair style! Mommy was pretty proud that she managed to get it done on my squirmy little head!”

“My” Girls

Below are the girls I spend the most time with. They are such joy in my life! All are in 10th grade and all were my students in 5th and 6th grade. Gil wanted to pracitice with portraiture, and after taking 10,000 pictures of Grace, needed new subjects. My girls were happy to oblige!

Lotta is a Finnish MK. She is one of the best students in her class, and she makes us laugh with her wit and sarcasm.

Aishi is Tanzanian. She is usually fun and easy-going, but not when she is on the soccer pitch or the basketball court! She is probably the best female athelete at school.

Bernice is part Indian and part Malaysian. Her parents run a church in Dar es Salaam. She is the best soccer goalie in school, and is quite artistic as well.

Lea is a German MK. She is also one of the best students in her class, and is absolutely delightful as “Juliet” in the upcoming Shakespeare production.

Dorothy is Tanzanian and her Dad works at school. She is also a menance in any sports competition, but really a romantic at heart!

Fundi Beatrice

One of the things I love about living in Tanzania are the tailors. It’s difficult to find workable clothing here, but beautiful fabric is plentiful, and so are tailors. The tailor I’ve most recently been using has been way too flaky, so I’ve been looking for another one. I was thrilled to find a young woman last week that’s just a few minutes walk from our house. Her name is Beatrice, and her shop is made out of one half of one of those big shipping containers. She uses an old-fashioned foot-pedal sewing machine. I’ve already had her make me a dress, a skirt, and curtain ties for my kitchen curtains–all for the equivalent of about $12. Made to order; done the next day. Can’t beat that!
